Since, therefore, we believe the Bible is sufficient in all matters pertaing to doctrine, life and godliness we desire to bring to the Christian community a look at the Scriptures to dispel the confusion and help all that find they need God’s answers to life situations and difficulties.

The Month Of June:

June has been blessed in many ways. We have had many visits to the blogsite. New people continue to come visit and read the posted articles. Some folks come to the site on a daily basis. While we have not been posting daily we do post weekly with at least 2 articles. We are seeing a steady visitation in people coming to Doctrines of Grace blogsite at http://pilgrimchristian.blogspot.com/ . This is what we desire. It is true that anyone can come and read an article and then go away never returning. Our desire however is to have people come to this site over and over as one faces life’s problems. There is truly a great need to recall and to know what to do regardimg the circumstances that happen in our lives. Therefore there is a need for this blogsite. The need is so that Christians may revisit the articles that give biblical and godly directives. The site has 434 articles for the Christian community to read and learn in a pleasant and instructive format. Almost all of this is focused upon practical Christian living with biblical directives. Patience and Wisdom Bring Peace (Prov. Part 1)

( Wisdom from the Book of Proverbs)

I truly love the book of Proverbs. I had a hard time picking one of the many, many topics it speaks to. Finally, I just had to choose one in light of my concern about how folks treat each other so negatively at times. These verses jumped out at me. I will simply let them speak for themselves…………Pamela

".... A patient man calms a quarrel." Prov 15:18

Proverbs 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.

Proverbs 19:19 A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty; if you rescue him, you will have to do it again.

Proverbs 22:24-25 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.

Proverbs 29:22 An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.

Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Proverbs 21:14 A gift given in secret soothes anger, and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.

Proverbs 27:4 Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?

Proverbs 29:8 Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.

Proverbs 29:11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.

Proverbs 30:33 For as churning the milk produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife."

Proverbs on Rebuke and Discipline (Prov. Part 2)

The theme of rebuking a brother comes up in conversation often. and there is much in Proverbs on that topic. Since rebuke and discipline seem to be somewhat synonymous, I am listing all the verses with these words in them. As always….the Scriptures speak for themselves….. Get out your Bibles…. Some of these verses have context with them that isn’t listed with them here... Pamela

Proverbs 1:23-27 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

Proverbs 3:11-12 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

Proverbs 9:8 8 Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you.

Proverbs 13:1 Proverbs 13:1 A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.

Proverbs 15:31-32 31 He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. 32 He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.

Proverbs 17:10 10 A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes a fool.

Proverbs 19:25 25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.

Proverbs 25:12 12 Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man's rebuke to a listening ear.

Proverbs 27:5-6 5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love. 6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Proverbs 30:5-6 5 "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

Proverbs 1:1-7 Proverbs 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-- 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-- 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 5:12-14 12 You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! 13 I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors. 14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly."

Proverbs 5:23 23 He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.

Proverbs 6:23 23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,

Proverbs 10:17 7 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

Proverbs 12:1 Proverbs 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.

Proverbs 13:18 8 He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.

Proverbs 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

Proverbs 15:5 A fool spurns his father's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows
prudence.

Proverbs 15:10 Stern discipline awaits him who leaves the path; he who hates correction will die.

Proverbs 15:32 He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.

Proverbs 19:18 18 Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.

Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.

Proverbs 23:13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

Proverbs 23:23 Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.

Proverbs 29:17 17 Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.

Self Image (Prov. Part 3)

....

I. A Wrong Self Image = Self Deception

We are to correct the way we think about ourselves so we do not live with a deceptive image of ourselves. We really do not know more about ourselves than God for he sees our depths (Psalms 139:2-3; Heb. 4: 12-13; 1 Jn 1:8).

Clearly man makes plans in the heart. A man with a true self image acknowledges that he is not an independant being. He understands that any plans he makes must be made with a "pencil with an eraser" understanding that God's will can change his plans as He desires. James 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"-- (14) yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. (15) Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."

Making plans believing our own self deception of who we think we are without giving a thought to the presence of God in the plans is foolish. One who looks at him / her self biblically will understand that their plans are subject to the Lord. This will affect how we see and understand God's changes to our plans and how His providence is communucated in prayer, to others and in our thanksgiving. (see blog entry - The Providence of God Brings Comfort to Believers).

http://christianthotsataglance.blogspot.com/2005/12/providence-of-god-brings-comfort-to.html

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. (Prov. 16:1)

All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the LORD weighs the motives. (Prov. 16:2)

For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He watches all his paths.(Prov. 5:21)

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. (Prov. 12:15)

II. We are to see our lives in the control of God. It is God and not man that directs our affairs. Therefore, we are not to fret but accept the sovereign purposes of the LORD.

The wages of the righteous is life, the income of the wicked, punishment. (Prov. 10:16)

It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich, and He adds no sorrow to it. (Prov. 10:22)

If the righteous will be rewarded in the earth, how much more the wicked and the sinner! (Prov. 11:31)

Do not let your heart envy sinners, but live in the fear of the LORD always. (Prov. 23:17)

III. How to View Oneself In Relation to the Word of God

"Counsel is mine and sound wisdom; I am understanding, power is mine." (Prov. 8:14)

"No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD." (Prov. 21:30)

IV. We Are Not To Esteem Ourselves But To Esteem Others.

a. Our Church Leaders

.(1Th 5:12 - 13) And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

b. Our Church Brothers

Phi 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

V. As We love our God and Neighbor We Will Be Esteemed Properly In The Sight of God and Man.

Pro 3:3-4 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. (4) So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.

WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Prov. Part 4)

(Pro 2:6) For the LORD gives wisdom; from
his mouth come knowledge and understanding...

I. Wisdom Knowledge And Understanding Are Linked Together In The Scriptures

(Pro 2:6) For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding...

Knowledge - is the apprehension by the mind of facts and truth.

Understanding -is the ability to take facts and break them down for full and complete, skillful, reasonable and discretionary, knowledge.

Wisdom - the ability to apply knowledge and understanding in order to reach the use of right means. In our Christian religion it is the wise person "who gives to the things of God the same acuteness that other men give to worldly affairs" (Lk 16:8).

Here are the passages broken out for you to read for your, knowledge, understand and wisdom of application.

a. Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding in same verses:

(Pro 14:6) A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.

b. Wisdom and Knowledge Mentioned Together in These Verses:

(Pro 2:6) For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
(Pro 3:13) Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding,
(Pro 3:19) The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens;
(Pro 5:1) My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding,
(Pro 8:1) Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice?
(Pro 10:13) On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense.
(Pro 10:23) Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.
(Pro 14:6) A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.
(Pro 14:33) Wisdom rests in the heart of a man of understanding, but it makes itself known even in the midst of fools.

II. The Benefits Of Wisdom And The Consequences In Not Gaining Wisdom

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. (Pro. 3:5, 6)

Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth. “Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; Love her, and she will watch over you. (Pro. 4:5, 6)

“Take my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than choicest gold. For wisdom is better than jewels; and all desirable things cannot compare with her.” (Pro. 8:10, 11)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Pro. 9:10)

Through insolence comes nothing but strife, but wisdom is with those who receive counsel. (Pro. 13:10)

Folly is joy to him who lacks sense, but a man of understanding walks straight. (Pro. 15:21)

He who neglects discipline despises himself, but he who listens to reproof acquires understanding. (Pro. 15:32)

The fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom, and before honor comes humility. (Pro. 15:33)

How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver. (Pro. 16:16)

He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will find good. (Pro. 19:8)

By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established… (Pro. 24:3)

My son, eat honey, for it is good, Yes, the honey from the comb is sweet to your taste; Know that wisdom is thus for your soul; If you find it, then there will be a future, And your hope will not be cut off. (Pro. 24:13, 14)

The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but the poor who has understanding sees through him. (Pro. 28:11)

The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. (Pro. 29:15)

III. Our Lord – A Person of Wisdom ..

a. From Birth
(Luk 2:39-40) And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.

b. At Twelve
(Lk. 2:43-52) And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man..

c. In His Teaching

Mat. 13:37-54) He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. "Have you understood all these things?" They said to him, "Yes." And he said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old." And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there,.
(Mat 13:53-54) And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?.

d. In Ability to Answer Critics.

(Mar 6:1-4) He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. (2) And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? (3) Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. (4) And Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household."

IV. Gospel - The Message Of The Wisdom Of God

1Co 1:17-24 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. (18) For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (19) For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." (20) Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? (21) For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. (22) For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, (23) but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, (24) but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

V. If You Are In A Trial And Need Wisdom Ask

(Jam 1:1-5) James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. (2) Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, (3) for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. (4) And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (5) If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

(Pro 18:24) A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
(Pro 27:6) Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.
(Pro 27:9) Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.
Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. (Pro. 27:17)
Do not forsake your own friend or your father's friend, and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity; better is a neighbor who is near than a brother far away. (Pro. 27:10)

II. Caution (See Hindrances to Friendships )

Pro 22:24-25 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: (25) Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

Jam 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

III. Buiilding Friendships

(Pro 17:17) A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

(Pro 18:24) A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
IV. Hindrances To Friendships -

(Pro 19:6) Many seek the favor of a generous man, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.

(Pro 19:4) Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.

(Pro 14:20) The poor is hated even of his own neighbor: but the rich hath many friends.

(Pro 19:4) Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbor.

Pro 16:28) A perverse man spreads strife, and a slanderer separates intimate friends.

( Pro 17:9) He who conceals a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.

V. Friends Being Seperated

(Pro 16:28) A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

(Pro 17:9) He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.VI. Our Lord, The Ultimate Friend

Luk 7:33-35 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. (34) The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! (35) But wisdom is justified of all her children.

Luk 12:1-4 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. (2) For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. (3) Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. (4) And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

Joh 15:13-15 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (14) Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. (15) Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Jam 2:21-24 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? (22) Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? (23) And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. (24) Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Jam 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

VII. An Unexpected Friend – Insight and Wisdom

(Pro 7:4) Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," and call insight your intimate friend,

Accountability Training Needed By All (Prov Part 6)

" In the matter of accountability, we should all admit and commit to one simple truth: we think we don't need it, but we need it desperately. Train yourself to be a person who welcomes counsel--you have the promise of the Word of God that your life will be blessed if you do. Don't let your flesh tell you that you don't need to be corrected or that your opinions are always right. Understand that discernment and wisdom come through the instruction we receive from one another. And take Solomon's warning seriously. Nothing brings turmoil into your life and the lives of others quickly than your stubborn refusal to humble yourself when reproved. Receiving counsel honors God and brings peace; refusing counsel dishonors Him and makes a mockery of what He tells us in Scripture."............. Dr. J.E. Bordwine

I. A Person Who Holds Themselves Accountable:

A. Loves Discipline
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. (Pro. 12:1)

B Heeds Instruction

He is on the path of life who heeds instruction, but he who ignores reproof goes astray.

Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life. (Pro. 4:13)

C.Listens To Counsel

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. (Pro. 12:15)

Oil and perfume make the heart glad, so a man's counsel is sweet to his friend. (Pro. 27:9)

II. Rebuke Works For People Of Understanding

A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred blows into a fool. (Pro. 17:10)

For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; and reproofs for discipline are the way of life... (Pro. 6:23)

(Pro 6:23) For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,

III. Accountability A Matter Of Parental Training - Warnng To Child

My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord or loathe his reproof, for whom the lord loves he reproves, even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights. (Pro. 3:11, 12)

A fool rejects his father's discipline, but he who regards reproof is sensible. (Pro. 15:5)

Take my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than choicest gold. (Pro. 8:10)

The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. (Pro. 29:15)

Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days. (Pro. 19:20)

(Pro 13:24) Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

(Pro 19:18) Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death.

(Pro 22:15) Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

(Pro 23:13) Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.

(Pro 29:17) Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.

IV. Neglecting Discipline

Poverty and shame will come to him who neglects discipline, but he who regards reproof will be honored. (Pro. 13:18)

He who neglects discipline despises himself, but he who listens to reproof acquires understanding. (Pro. 15:32)

Cease listening, my son, to discipline, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. (Pro. 19:27)

A man who hardens his neck after much reproof will suddenly be broken beyond remedy. (Pro. 29:1)

Being Honest Delights God (Prov Part 7)

Honesty is a reflection of the character of God. God is concerned that men be truthful, honest and just in all our labors and dealings in society and in the Church......Steve

A. Fair measures, weights and balances, are the Lords. We are to imitate His character.

A false balance is an abomination to the LORD,but a just weight is His delight. (Pro. 11:1)

(Pro 16:11) A just weight and balance are the LORD's: all the weights of the bag are his work.

(Pro 20:23) Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

"Bad, bad," says the buyer, but when he goes his way, then he boasts. (Pro. 20:14)

D. In Truthful Commmunication There Is Endurance for Truth, But Not For Falsehood

He who speaks truth tells what is right, but a false witness, deceit. (Pro. 12:17)

Truthful lips will be established forever, buta lying tongue is only for a moment. (Pro. 12:19)

(Pro 8:6) Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.

(Pro 15:26) The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

E. Justice With Honesty Which Brings Joy and Stability

The exercise of justice is joy for the righteous, but is terror to the workers of iniquity. (Pro. 21:15)

The king gives stability to the land by justice, but a man who takes bribes overthrows it. (Pro. 29:4)

(1Ti 2:2) (Pray) .... For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

F. The Wicked Do Not Have An Understanding of Justice

A wicked man receives a bribe from the bosom to pervert the ways of justice. (Pro. 17:23)

Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand all things. (Pro. 28:5)

G. Honesty - For The Presence of the God of Peace

(Phi 4:8-9) Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

Instant Life And Godly Living (Prov. Part 8)

One of the joys of reading and re-reading Proverbs for me recently has been having different things stand out to me every time. This time, as I read through, I noticed how often it spoke of things in the context of rushing, quickness, or haste. Almost every time, the concept of haste was shown as negative and contrasted with something better, which is in the form of Hebrew Poetry that is called Antithetical. In this day and age of instant gratification, microwave ovens, and 30 minute plot lines, we have been trained to hurry. Wisdom is a time consuming pursuit, a life long endeavor. Let us slow down for a few minutes and look over some of the scriptures in Proverbs relating to haste… Pamela

As always…. The scriptures speak for themselves……… Enjoy!

The Ways of the Simple (Prov. Part 10)

The word, “simple” is found 21 time in the Bible. The first three instances, it is used as a synonym to easy. Everything thereafter is referring to a person who is called “simple”. After looking up every verse using this word, I have concluded that calling someone simple, using the meaning of the majority use in scripture, is NOT a complement.

I will list the verses in Proverbs (where most of these verses are found) with a bit of context, and let you draw your own conclusions. It is far better to look these up with your Bible open.
.......

Proverbs 1:1-6 NIV Proverbs 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-- 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-- 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.

Proverbs 1:22 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?

Proverbs 1:32-33 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."

Proverbs 7:7 7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who lacked judgment.

Proverbs 8:4-6 4 "To you, O men, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind. 5 You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, gain understanding. 6 Listen, for I have worthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.

Proverbs 9:4-6 4 "Let all who are simple come in here!" she says to those who lack judgment. 5 "Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of understanding.

Proverbs 9:16 16 "Let all who are simple come in here!" she says to those who lack judgment.

Proverbs 22:3 3 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

Proverbs 27:12 12 The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

Proverbs 14:15 15 A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.

Proverbs 14:18 18 The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

Proverbs 21:11 11 When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge.

Proverbs 19:25 25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.

Proverbs 22:3 3 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

Proverbs 27:12 12 The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

The Goal .... Tongue Control(Prov. Part 11)

A Personal Note To You: It seems very hypocritical of me to be the one to post this on the tongue. I cannot tell you how often I fail in not controlling the tongue. I have been insensitive saying things without the flavour of grace. I have in anger exploded and let the mouth say regrettable things. I have judged others where I did not have all the facts before me. And I have beared false witness by making statements concerning folks at times when I should have gone to them to find out the "what, why and whom" concerning what was truly meant or said or did. "Have I grown in control of the tongue? Yes! by God's grace."

"Am I perfect in control of the tongue? NO." I will seek to grow in this area. I will promise this that I will repent and seek forgivness if I sin against others with my tongue. I ask that you be patient with me, love me and let me know if and when I sin in this manner and I shall see reconcilation with you before my Almighty God..... Steve

God's Word "Filtered"!

Canonicity

Kanon = a rod, staff or ruler…..a measuring rod. This Greek word may be a derivative of the Hebrew word kaneh (Ezek. 40:3-42:16) Therefore there was a norm by which something was measured. Paul understood the meaning of this word in Gal 6:16.

So it is and was in recognizing the inspired scripture. God was not pleased to give us a book that contained all 66 books at one time. He chose in his good pleasure to use men throughout history to write about his salvation, leading and working with his people. He used the personalities and feelings of the writers in the inspiration of His word. He used them in their time in history. Therefore it was not possible to give one book at creation and it be called the inspired Bible. Therefore His people must recognize his word. “How, you may ask, did the Church discover or recognize a book or the particular books of the Bible as being His word?” Several natural “filters” were naturally applied to ensure recognition. These were:

A. Is the writing authoritative? = Is it a divine, “Thus saith the Lord”

B. Is it prophetic” written by a man of God? = Was he in the mainstream redemptive revelation being an apostle or prophet? (Gal. 1:1-24; 2:4)

C. Is it authentic? = Does it tell the truth about God, Messiah / Christ, Man, Grace, Faith, Etc.?

D. Does the Book have the power of God, Is it Dynamic? = Is it life transforming? Is it living and active and able to make one wise unto salvation?

E. Was it received? = Has it been accepted by the people of God? This was done, in many or most instances ever before any formal universal official confirmation. (Note: the Church at large did not have e-mail)

All of the books of the Bible have met the standard. Most were recognized immediately while only a few had to be looked at in more detail for they required a greater discernment. Thank God for now there is no doubt but that God has spoken in all 66 books of the Bible. All the “filters” were met. So we can listen as God speaks! And He speaks through His inspired word.

WHAT IS POSTMILLENNIALISM?
By Rob Horne

INTRODUCTION
.
Does the Bible teach that conditions in the world will become steadily worse as history unfolds and the time of Christ's return draws nearer? Are Christians destined to minority status, marginal influence in society, and inevitable defeat prior to the second coming? Or does the Bible teach that that there will be a remarkable period of peace, spiritual prosperity, and victorious expansion for the church prior to the return of Christ at the end of the age?

.
These escahtological questions are not merely idle speculation about date-setting, but presuppose a philosophy of history and an understanding of the lordship of Christ that have practical and pervasive implications for the believers involvement in missionary outreach, evangelism, and social renewal.

Biblical escahtology is fundamentally not a matter of calendar, but of Christology. Developing an eschatological understanding is not a matter of assembling isolated texts in some artifical scheme, but rather one of gaining a comprehensive and integrated perspective of the sovereign God's purpose for human history.

.
THE MAIN TENETS OF POSTMILLENNIALISM
.
The main tenets of postmillennialism have been defined as follows:
.
1. Through the preaching of the gospel Christian missions and evangelism will attain remarkable success, and the church will enjoy an unprecedented period of numerical expansion and spiritual vitality.
.
2. This period of spiritual prosperity, the millennium, understood as a long period of time, is to be characterized by conditions of increasing peace and economic well-being in the world as a result of the growing influence of Christian truth.
.
3. The millennium will also be characterized by the conversion of large numbers of ethnic Jews to the Christian faith (Romans 11:25-26).
.
4. At the end of the millennial period there will be a brief period apostasy and sharp conflict between Christian and evil forces (Rev. 20:7-10).
.
5. Finally, and simultaneously there will occur the visible return of Christ, the resurrection of the righteous and the wicked, the final judgment, and the revelation of the new heavens and the new earth.

THE WORLD IS GROWING BETTER

Part One
Loraine Boettner

The redemption of the world is a long, slow process, extending through the centuries, yet surely approaching an appointed goal. We live in the day of advancing victory, although there are many apparent set-backs. As seen from the human viewpoint it often looks as though the forces of evil are about to gain the upper hand. Periods of spiritual advance and prosperity alternate with periods of spiritual decline and depression. But as one age succeeds another there is progress. Looking back across the nearly two thousand years that have passed since the coming of Christ we can see that there has indeed been marvelous progress. This Process ultimately shall be competed, and before Christ comes again we shall see a Christianized world. This does not mean that all sin ever will be eradicated. There always will be some tares among the wheat until the time of harvest-and the harvest, the Lord tells us, is the end of the world. Even the righteous fall, sometimes grievously, into temptation and sin. But it does mean that Christian principles of life and conduct are to become the accepted standards in public and private life.

That a great spiritual advance has been made should be clear to all. Consider, for instance, the awful moral and spiritual conditions that existed on earth before the coming of Christ,-- the world at large groping helplessly in pagan darkness, with slavery, polygamy, the oppressed conditions of women and children, the almost complete lack of political freedom, and the ignorance, poverty, and extremely primitive medical care that was the lot of nearly all except those who belonged to the ruling classes. Today the world at large is on a far higher plane. Christian principles are the accepted standards in many nations even though they are not consistently practiced. Slavery and polygamy have practically disappeared. The status of women and children has been improved immeasurably. Social and economic conditions in almost all nations have reached a new high plateau. A spirit of cooperation is much more manifest among the nations than it has ever been before.

International incidents which only a few years ago would have resulted in wars are now usually settled by arbitration. As an evidence of international good will witness the fact that the United States this fiscal year (July, 1957 to July, 1958) appropriated more than three billion dollars for the foreign aid and mutual security program, and since the end of World War II has given to other nations more than sixty billion dollars for these purposes. Since our population is approximately 170,000,000, this means an average contribution of $350 for every man, woman and child in the United States. And this does not include the other very considerable sums that have been given by individuals, churches and other organizations. This huge amount of goods and services has been given freely by this enlightened and predominantly Protestant nation to nations of other races and religions, with no expectation that it ever will be paid back, an effective expression of unselfishness and international good will. That record has never been even remotely approached before by this or any other nation in all the history of the world.

Recently the London Times, the leading newspaper in England, after commending the wisdom and generosity with which the United States acted, said: "There are other things so obvious to us that we take them for granted. But because silence can be misunderstood it is worth saying once again that no nation has ever come into possession of such power for good or ill, for freedom or tyranny, for friendship or enmity among the peoples of the world, and that no nation in history has used those powers, by and large, with greater vision, restraint, responsibility and courage" (Issue of March 23, 1954).

Today there is much more wealth consecrated to the service of the Church than ever before; and, in spite of the defection toward Modernism in some places, we believe there is far more really earnest evangelistic and missionary activity than at any time in the past. This is indicated by a number of developments. We cite particularly the following. Up until the time of the Reformation the Bible had been a book for priests only. It was written in Latin, and the Roman Church refused to allow it to be translated into the languages of the common people. But when the Reformers came on the scene all that was changed. The Bible was soon translated into all of the vernacular tongues of Europe, and wherever the light of the Reformation went it became the book of the common people. Decrees of popes and church councils gave way to the Word of life. Luther translated the entire Bible into German for the people of his native land, and within 25 years of its appearance one hundred editions of the German Bible came off the press. The same was true in France, Holland, England, and Scotland. Protestant Bible societies now circulate more Bibles each year than were circulated in the fifteen centuries that preceded the Reformation.

Publishers report that more than 8,000,000 copies of the complete Bible were sold in the United States in 1956. Sales were up about 10 per cent from 1955, which was the previous record year. Incidentally, it is interesting to notice that of the above number the King James Version easily held its place as the popular favorite, its total sales being more than 6,000,000 copies. The Revised Standard Version sold nearly 1,000,000 copies; the Douay Version, the standard Bible for American Roman Catholics, about 750,000; Jewish Bibles about 70,000; modern speech translations such as Moffatt, Goodspeed, etc., about 25,000; the American Standard Version of 1901 and others about 150,000. In addition to the above total many millions of copies of the New Testament and of portions of the Bible were sold.

During the last 150 years the Bible has been translated into all of the major languages of the world. According to the report given at the 1957 annual meeting of the American Bible Society the complete Bible, Old and New Testament, is now available in 210 languages and dialects, the complete New Testament is available in 270 more, and at least one book of the Bible, usually one of the gospels, has been translated into 629 more, for a total of 1109 languages and dialects into which the Bible has been translated in whole or in part. (United Press report, Jan. 12, 1957).

Today the Bible is available in whole or in part in the native tongue of 98 per cent of the people of the world. Surely that must be acknowledged as great progress and as a very broad and substantial basis on which to rear the future structure of Christianity. None of the so-called "best seller" books attain more than a small fraction of the number of Bibles sold.

THE WORLD IS GROWING BETTER-

Part Two

Loraine Boettner

Furthermore, the Christian message is being broadcast by radio and television in all the principal languages of the world. Several evangelical programs, with nation-wide or world-wide coverage have been launched within recent years-e.g, The Lutheran Hour, Missouri Synod (broadcasting in more than 50 languages); Coral Ridge Ministries (Presbyterian); The Back To God Hour (Christian Reformed, broadcasting in 8 languages); and Family Radio (independent), to name only a few. There are literally hundreds of other radio and television programs, many of which are heard daily. The gospel is thus brought into many a home and into many a sick room where it would not otherwise be heard, and to many a distant farm or lonely mining or lumber camp, to people on the highways and to ships at sea. How marvelous that is, compared with the very limited proclamation that prevailed for so many centuries! The over-all result is that for the first time in history the people of the entire world have the evangelical Christian message made available to them.

The number of theological seminaries, Bible institutes and Christian colleges in which the Bible is studied systematically is growing faster than the population, and the enrollment is increasing steadily. Numerous Christian magazines with very wide circulations have been established within recent years. A considerable proportion of the new books that come from the press either deal directly with Christianity or with some phase of religion.

During the past two centuries the Christian Church has made great progress and has established thousands upon thousands of local churches. It has become customary in the United States to think of the Colonial period as an age of deep faith. Yet the fact is that a large number of the people who came to these shores during that time did so to escape religious oppression in European countries, and they were slow in establishing new churches, Many had no church connection to begin with, or dropped the connection they did have, as has so often been the case in frontier or pioneer settlements. The Pilgrims and Puritans were the exception to the rule, but while they were strong in some sections other sections were quite different. Professor Leonard Verduin, of the Department of History in the University of Michigan has this to say regarding church membership in the colonial period: "The first century and a half of American history was a mere elongation of European establishmentism. Throughout the colonies by and large there was a favored church. And, contrary to a legend which one often hears that those were golden days, America was never so near to being post-Christian as it was at the end of those 150 years. Competent historians find not more than 8 per cent of the adult population church-related. Then came the Revolution, and out of it was born the federal constitution. As by a divine economy it was laid down once and for all in the First Amendment that establishment was to be 'out' in this new commonwealth. And, even as a patient sometimes rallies in an amazing fashion at the injection of sulfa, so did this new commonwealth from that moment on witness the return of religion. Steadily, without fluctuation, the figure of the percentage of church membership rises, until today we stand at an all time high-not far below 60 per cent of the population today holding church membership" (The Reformed Journal, Jan. 1953).

We may add that in 1870 church membership in the United States stood at 18 per cent, a percentage increase three times that of the Revolutionary War period. Today it stands at an all time high of 61 per cent, an increase of 4 per cent within the last five years. Of these, 35 per cent are members of Protestant churches, 20 per cent are Roman Catholics (Year Book of American Churches, 1956). So-called Modernism or Liberalism has indeed risen in some quarters to deny a greater or lesser portion of the faith. But Modernism has nothing positive to offer. Its leading advocates set forth conflicting systems, and in effect acknowledge that the system is bankrupt. We are confident that after the present season of criticism and testing of the foundations is over we shall have a grander and stronger edifice of theology than the ages have yet seen.

Statistics indicate that the world over Christianity has grown more in the last one hundred years than in the preceding eighteen hundred, and that it now has a considerably larger number of nominal adherents than the combined total of any other two world religions. These figures show that of a total world population of about two and one-half billion there are approximately 800,000,000 Christians, 350,000,000 Confucianists (including Taoists), 320,000,000 Moslems, 310,000,000 Hindus, 150,000,000 Buddhists, 20,000,000 Shintoists, and 12,000,000 Jews. And while many of those who are counted as Christians are only "nominally" such, the proportion of true Christians probably is as great or greater than is the proportion of true adherents in any of the pagan religions. All of the other religions, with the exception of Muhammadanism, are much older than Christianity. All of the false religions are dying. Christianity alone is able to grow and flourish under modern civilization, while all of the others soon disintegrate when brought under its glaring light. We feel perfectly confident in asserting that all of the anti-Christian religions and anti-Christian philosophies of our day are demonstrably false. Their histories show what complete failures they have been so far as raising the moral, spiritual and intellectual standards of their adherents is concerned. They await only the coup de grace of an aroused and energetic Christianity to send them into oblivion. In this connection Dr. Albertus Pieters has well said: "In the early church Ebionitism, Gnosticism, Montanism, Arianism and Pelagianism endangered the life of the church. They are remembered now only by church historians. Later it was Romanism and Socinianism. In modern life it is Unitarianism, Modernism, Mormonism, Russelism, Christian Science, Spiritualism, etc.,-a long list of movements of Satanic origin that comes on like a flood, and for a time make timid believers afraid that the church will be overwhelmed and the gospel permanently lost to the world-- but it never comes to pass. The present heresies will disappear as did those of the past" (Studies in the Revelation of St. John, p. 165).

Only within the last one hundred years have foreign missions really come into their own. As they have recently been developed, with great church organizations behind them and with extensive facilities for translating and publishing Christian literature in many languages, they are in a position to carry on a work of evangelism in foreign lands such as the world has never seen before. It is safe to say that the present generation living in India, China, Japan, Korea, Indo-China and the Near East have seen greater changes in religion, society and government than occurred in the preceding two thousand years. Not only has the foundation been laid in most of these countries for a further evangelical advance, but under the benign influence of the Church innumerable local churches, schools and hospitals have been founded, ethical culture and social services have advanced greatly, and moral standards are much higher today than when the Church was first established. That we may get a truer view of the progress that has been made we cite the following picture of the early world into which Christianity came, as given by Dr. William Hendriksen: "Let us transplant ourselves to the world of John the apostle, and imagine that the slow finger of history's clock is pointing to the first century A. D. Now, look around you in every direction. What a picture of spiritual darkness and desolation! Try to count the many idols that disgrace the streets and sanctuaries of imperial Rome. The abominations, the filth and corruption attendant upon the celebration of pagan festivals, the superstitions, vices, etc., are very staggering. Temples and shrines throughout the world are crowded with ignorant, half-despairing worshippers. We see a few scattered churches established by the efforts of Paul and others. For the rest, heathendom is everywhere triumphant. All the nations -- with the exception of the Jews-- are under the thraldom of Satan!" (More Than Conquerors, p. 224).

When we contrast the rapid spread of Christianity in recent years with the rapid disintegration that is taking place in all of the other world religions, it becomes very clear that Christianity is the future world religion. There are, however, some who tell us in all seriousness that the world is getting worse. Surely they are prompted to do so only in defense of a theory that clearly is contradicted by the facts. In response to such reasoning Dr. Snowden says :"The true way of judging the world is to compare its present with its past condition and note in which direction it is moving. Is it going backward, or forward, is it getting worse or better? It may be wrapped in gloomy twilight, but is it the twilight of the evening, or of the morning? Are the shadows deepening into starless night, or are they fleeing before the rising sun? One glance at the world as it is today compared with what it was ten or twenty centuries ago shows us that it has swept through a wide arc and is moving toward the morning" ( The Coming of the Lord, p. 250).

But while great progress has been made as the Church has extended her witness to the far corners of the earth, much the greater part of the work yet remains to be accomplished. Adherents of the pagan religions still outnumber those of the Christian faith, and even within the Church there is a crying need for a fuller knowledge of the contents of the Christian faith and for a much more consistent living in accordance with those principles on the part of professing Christian people. The binding of Satan, described in Revelation 20:1-3, we now perceive to be not a sudden event, but a very long, slow process. It has been in process of accomplishment for more than nineteen centuries, and much progress has been made. But no time limit can be set as to how much longer the process may have to be continued before it is crowned with success, nor how long the era of righteousness will prevail over the earth before the Lord returns. The nineteen centuries that have elapsed since the Christian era began may well indicate that several more centuries, perhaps even millenniums, may be required, particularly if devastating wars yet remain to be fought, as is of course perfectly possible.

Skeptics sometimes point to present day evils and tell us that we are living in a post-Christian age. But, no, there has never yet been a truly Christian age, nor has so much as one nation ever been consistently Christian. The age in which we are living is still pre-Christian. That the progress of the Church through these years has been slow is due to the fact that Christians in general have not taken seriously Christ's command to evangelize the world. The Great Commission is addressed not merely to ministers and missionaries, but to all Christians everywhere. No distinction is made in this command between ministers and laymen. The command applies to parents rearing their children, to children in regard to their parents, to individuals in whatever relationship they stand to their neighbors or business or social companions, to those who teach in the schools, to employers and employees in their mutual relationships, to writers, newsmen, statesmen, to Christians in general regardless of occupation or station in life. The Gospel is the "good news" of the salvation that God has provided for sinful men, and it should be given out by all who have it,-- given out by word of mouth, through the example of a Christian life, and by the effective and generous use of money or property or time as opportunity affords. Oftentimes a word sincerely spoken by a friend or neighbor to one who is outside the Church is more persuasive than what is said by the minister. It has been said: "No one can perform a higher service than this -- to make more accessible the riches that are in Christ Jesus." Let Christians everywhere take seriously the command to evangelize the world and the work will be accomplished in a comparatively short time.

Roderick Campbell has well said: "Some day the Christian church will learn to profit by the bitter experience of the church and nation of the Old Covenant. Two very pointed and useful lessons may be learned from the records of the past. Israel had been commanded by God to march in and take possession of the Promised Land. About one year after they left Egypt they reached the borders of the land. Then their faith and their courage failed. 'Let us make a captain,' they say, 'and let us return into Egypt.' What is the result? -- forty weary years of wandering among the rocks and the sand of the desert, and the death of that entire adult generation with the exception of two men of faith ( cf. Nu. 14; 32:10-13)."The other lesson is equally profitable and clear. A new army under Joshua entered the land. It won its first signal victory at Jericho. It then met bitter and humiliating defeat. Why? Israel had sinned. The guilty party must be punished and every forbidden thing destroyed before victory could be achieved. When this was done Israel found itself on the side of the Almighty ( Joshua 7). God fought for Israel with a mighty hand. The fulfillment of prophecy awaits the day when the church will really believe that God will do all that He has promised to do, and when the church will sincerely aim at entire conformity to the revealed will of God. Then, by the agency of imperfect but faithful men, we may expect God to do what He has promised to do" (Israel and the New Covenant, p. 162).

Premillennialists sometimes try to refute this general view by citing the question asked in Luke 18:8, "When the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? And they infer that the answer must be "No." But in order to give a negative answer to this question it is necessary to ignore the many statements in Scripture which describe the latter day glory of the Church. Surely an answer which at first might seem to be implied but which is not given in Scripture should not be allowed to overweigh the many references which speak of the triumph of righteousness in the earth. We submit that a question such as that in Luke 18:8 does not necessarily require a negative answer. When in the farewell discourse to the disciples Jesus asked, "Do ye now believe?" (John 16:31), no answer is given, but we do not believe that the implied answer is "No." When Paul asked, "King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets?" (Acts 26:27), the implied answer might seem to be "No," for there was little to indicate that Agrippa did believe. But Paul quickly adds, "I know that thou believest."

In closing this chapter we should point out that some postmillennial writers, as well as others, have fallen into the error of assuming too rapid progress. Dr. Snowden, for instance, after showing so clearly the error of the Premillennialists in date-setting and in assuming the near return of Christ, went on to make the same kind of an error in assuming that the Millennium was just about to dawn. In his book, The Coming of the Lord, written while the First World War was in progress, he assumed that the successful conclusion of the war, which he saw as in the near future, would put an end to militarism forever, and that it would be followed by a rapid development toward the millennial era. That the lessons learned from the First World War should have had that effect we readily agree. But whether the time will be long or short we have no way of knowing. This we can say: Postmillennialism does not despair of the power of the Gospel to convert the world, but holds rather that it cannot be defeated, that over the centuries it will win its way, and that eventually the goal will be achieved.

In the light of these facts we face the future confident that the best is yet to be. Let Christians everywhere thank God for the progress that has been made and take courage, Their future is as bright as the promises of God.
